This page argues well for needing another 'basket'. Pity there are none.

The moon is NOT Earth; living there takes a significant technology base and importation of orgnixcs, even oxygen at first. While it CAN become a base for human activity, and a rich ne, it will take manyyears of expensive devlopment to get to thebreak even point, then show a surplus to advance pazt that toother bodies. HUMAN LIFE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LIFE IN  SPACE, and while technology can sustain humanity, every bit of it is going to be expensive in energy, labor, and resources. Ignoring 'expensive' as a term of MONEY, it is going to be a tough row to hoe.

"Life in space", a popular term. Life in space, as opposed to life in a artificial environment in space, is going to be VERY alien to humanity, SO alien we may not recognize it as life. Fish are adapted to their evironment, zebra's to their, and anything living in space will be adapted to it's envoronment. WE ARE NOT THAT SPECIES.

Hopefully, continuing technological advancement will result in suitable wheelchairs to keep us alive long enough to pile up a massive fund to cvome home to retire on a nice patch of dirt someplace on the cool green hills of Earth, as Heinlein's ficticious bard sang.
